Welcome! Let's get to know each other!

Hi! I have an almost-eleven-year-old son & this is our second year of homeschooling. I would say that I have more of a traditional approach – I like to use My Father’s World curriculum & then add/subtract from that. We also do a co-op & attend a weekly elementary language arts class taught by a certified teacher. My son was attending a small Christian school but was very distracted in a split-level classroom. God impressed it upon my heart to try homeschooling & opened the doors for it to happen. I love being able to focus on different things that need more attention (like math!). I also enjoy fieldtrip opportunities.

Hi! I’m Jennifer.

We have 5 girls between us…18, nearly 17, 4, 2 and the little turns one next week. Plus we are expecting! We have been homeschooling the four year old for about two years and will start official kindergarten in the coming months.

I really started thinking about homeschool while pregnant with the 4 year old. The older two were really struggling in the public school system (and still are). I knew kids in our local school and felt that our child wouldn’t get a great education if we remained there. We have moved twice since then…the last move brought us to a city that I refuse to put my kids in the system. At the moment we have no idea whether we will be here long term, but I am trying to think that way when it comes to my kiddos educations. It seems like we are leaning a bit to the classical, with a little traditional and eclectic mixed in…

Thanks to you both for starting this forum. I am sure that it will become a great resource for all!

How long have you been homeschooling? 7 years
How many children do you have? 3
What teaching style do you like best? Classical with a mix of eclectic
Why did you start homeschooling? We were going to move soon and I didn’t want my son to change schools and it worked for us so we continued. :grinning:

Hi! I’m Teresa.

My husband and I have two kids, ages 6 and 3, with a third on the way!

We did “preschool” with our oldest last year and moved on to kindergarten this year. I guess that means we’ve been homeschooling for 2 years now!

We are a military family and have the possibility for several moves ahead of us. We liked the idea of being able to provide a consistent education to our children, while also being able to tailor their educational experiences to their interests, desires and abilities. It allows us to spend precious family time together when we can and has really helped our children develop into inquisitive and answer seeking little boys.

We lean toward a more traditional/eclectic mix of styles, but who knows how that will change in the coming years.

Hi my name is Jessica. I am new to this forum and new to homeschooling. I have 2 children I plan to start homeschooling in July or August, (not sure when i’m supposed to start). I will be pulling my daughter out of private high school and starting my youngest who’s 5.
I’m not familiar with the styles of homeschooling as I am still researching as much as possible.
I have many reasons why we are choosing to home educate. My 16 yr old daughter struggles every year to pass her classes and I have been ignorant to my options, including homeschooling. With my 5 yr old son; who thinks hes a ninja or race car driver, depending on what day of the week it is, quickly approaching school age, I want to be certain that I can allow him to grow and learn without constrictions. I have no idea where to start and sometimes I’m not sure what questions to ask, because I don’t KNOW what questions to ask. Any and all suggestions and advice is welcome.
Thank you!

My Name is Sandy and I have been homeschooling for 9 yrs. I have 3 kiddos 6,12 and 14. My style of homeschooling is eclectic. I personally first started homeschooling because it was something my husband really wanted and I wanted him to lead. After struggling the first year I really prayed about why, the Lord showed me that I needed to do it to glorify him. Now things are never perfect around here but things are running so much better. I do have a son with dyslexia and a son who loves lap books and your site has been so wonderful and help full. I love your heart to help and share what you do.

Hi! I am very excited about this community! My name is Michelle and we have been homeschooling for 3 years now. My son is 7 and in second grade and we recently were surprised to learn we are expecting another child later this year!
We started homeschooling from the beginning. We knew we wanted our son to have an education that included the Bible, but were unable to afford the local Christian schools. Well, the Lord provides! He has led us through many changes and brought us to a place that we are happy and comfortable with. We are probably closest to the Charlotte Mason method than anything else but I choose the books and don’t get too stressed about it. So I’m sure that many Charlotte Mason educators would say we use too much “twaddle”, but we find that a variety of choices is best for us.
I am very excited to get to know some other homeschoolers! Thank you Erica and Jason for this wonderful forum!

Hi there!

I’m Josie, homeschooling newbie of a 5 year old girl and expecting another girl very soon!) Our teaching style is traditional. We started homeschooling because we thought it was going to be the best for our little ones  Enjoying the journey-grace for every day!

Hello  We have been homeschooling our 8 yo son and 6 yo daughter for about 3.5 years now, and expect to homeschool our new baby arriving in May. Our approach tends to be somewhat eclectic relying heavily on classical education and Charlotte Mason. We started homeschooling when our son went to 4K. I never thought we would homeschool, but 4K was something of a disaster which shook us up and helped us to consider all of our options. Now I consider that year to be a huge blessing! Homeschooling allows us to live out our faith and values in a much more rich, full and cohesive way. Some days are hard, yes, but overall we really enjoy it. This is the first year I have felt anything approaching organized. Still not exactly organized (certainly not to Erica’s level!) but for us, much much better, thanks be to God!

HI I’m Kellyc (hello to the other Kelly!)

How long have you been homeschooling? 8 years!
How many children do you have? 4
What teaching style do you like best? we are traditional with a lot of hands on
Why did you start homeschooling? Because we believe that is what God’s plan was for our family

Hi. I’m Andrea. We’ve been homeschooling 2 years. We have 4 kids, although one is still cookin. I’m a mix of cm and classical, I think! We homeschool because it seemed right for us…God, kids, the hubs and me-it all seemed to line up. And we love it most of the time

Hi, I’m Julie! I have four sons ages 24, 22, almost 6 & my littlest will be 4 in March. My 3rd son started kindergarten this year & is currently in public school. His pediatric developmental doctor thought it would be best for him to be in that environment. I agreed that we would try a year. I can’t wait for this year to be over. I struggled with my older two being in public schools but I can’t believe how much things have changed for the worse in just the few years that have gone by. I’ll stop now before I go into full rant mode. Although I homeschooled my 2nd son for a time (part of 4th, part of 5th & all of 6th grade), I count myself new to homeschooling. Especially when asked questions like teaching style. I’m not sure who Charlotte Mason even is. Even though I want to pull my son out of public school now, questions like that show me I have much more research to do before we’re ready to begin. Why do I want to homeschool? I want to see my kids learn to the best of their ability. Sitting at a desk for the majority of the day with 24 other students & maybe a 20 minute recess doesn’t sit right with me. I want better for my kids. It won’t be easy, but I know it will be worth it.

Hi! I’m Allison. I’ve been homeschooling for 2 years. Our daughter is 7 and doing 2nd grade work. Our son is 4 1/2 and is in Preschool at a local Christian preschool. He will be joining us for Kindergarten next year and is very excited! I’m an eclectic homeschooler but definitely err on the side of Classical/Traditional. I would love to be more relaxed but was a classroom teacher before having children, so I find it tough to break away from the way I had to do things there! It gets easier everyday, though!! My husband and I decided that I would homeschool our children because we want to be able to incorporate our Christian worldview into ALL aspects of our children’s education.

HI I’m Mya, I have a 5 month old, a 2 year old, a 4 year old and a 5 year old! We started out this year with K and Pre K. So far I’m going with a Classical mix with a lot of CM reading stuff. I love that being home with my kids gives me the freedom to do so much more with them than just school. And there is no way I was ready for my 5 year old to spend 8 hours a day somewhere else yet! Its been a crazy beginning, starting to HS with a toddler and a newborn but I love it so far.

Hi, my name is Debra. I have been homeschooling full time for over a year now (and part time for two and half years before that). I have two boys, almost 10 and almost 7. I started homeschooling full time when we relocated to Colorado. I use a mix of approaches. Although I didn’t start out homeschooling, I am loving the decision we made to homeschool now. I love watching the light bulb turn on when my kids learn something new.

Hi Everyone!!
I’m freezing in Maryland
We have 5 children ages 7, 6, 3, 2, 6 months. All girls except the 2 year old. We started homeschooling when my oldest who is almost 8, by the way, started kindergarten. She would go to school everyday and was a complete mess. I never thought I would homeschool, but when I was told that we couldn’t get her a teacher that would be a better match for her, I lept into Homeschool full force, and with only 2 days to plan! We have been going strong ever since and now wouldn’t think any other way could be better. We use a variety of homeschooling approaches, usually whatever works that week! We recently learned that our oldest daughter is dyslexic, which has only made our love for homeschooling that much more!

So glad to have a place to come and chat with other fellow homeschoolers!

Hey there! I’m Jessica. I am a former public school teacher and am homeschooling our 9 and 6 year old kids. This is our first year. We LOVE it! We also just welcomed our new baby Joseph to our family one month ago. We are homeschooling because we just aren’t comfortable with the direction public school is headed and really felt called by God to do this. Our style is definitely eclectic. We have joined a Classical Conversations group and love what it is adding to our curriculum.

Hello from SE Texas.
We have one awesome 14 year old son. We have been homeschooling DS for what is equal to 3 years of school. We home schooled for 5th and 6th grade, then DS wanted to try a Christian school in the area. That turned out to be a bad call so on Valentines Day last year we took him back out of ‘school’ and DH taught him the best he could while the two of us rearrange our work schedule so that I could be home with DS this year. DS is now in 8th, we are doing eclectic style learning so that we can tailor his schooling to him. Is there any one else out there with only one child and/or teenager? We got into home schooling because we are not happy with were public school is heading.

Hi Sandy, I also have a 14 year old, but he has ADD. We are already looking into things for High School, I was just wondering what you all are thinking of doing. DH and I are struggling with History/Geography and the Grammar.

My name is Beth. I am mother to four kids five and under. They are all 20 months apart. WE have a 5, 3, 2 and 3 month old. I was able to be surrounded by some veteran home school moms when I had my first son. We probably decided when he was ten months old that we would homeschool. We are probably a bit traditional with a mix of classical. We are apart of Classical Conversations a LOVE it. IT really works for our family. We finishing up our second year with official homeschool (pre-k and now K) Although a lot of life happened and thankfully his school time in minimal so for now we are making it through.
