Welcome! Let's get to know each other!

My name is Sarah. We have four kiddos - J-Man will be 10 next week, M-Girl is almost 7, T-Baby is almost 4 (and not really a baby any more. Funny how that happens), and our newest bundle, Baby E, was born January 3 of this year. We’ve been homeschooling for four and a half years - we pulled J-Man out of public schools half way through his kindergarten year (right after T-Baby was born so perfect timing really) due to bullying issues and haven’t looked back. We tend to do a classic curriculum - we are thoroughly enjoying learning Latin as a family.

Hi Im Kristin. I am just getting starting with this! I have 3 kids- a 3 year old son and 18 month old twins. We are starting some preschool and praying about how to proceed once K starts. I am very open to home schooling and pretty excited about it so looking forward to reading lots on this forum!!

Hi, I am Joede, mom to 6. I have been schooling for about 7 years. My oldest daughter has special needs and graduated from high school (public school) in 2011, but due to her special needs, we still school her as well.
We use an eclectic mix in our schooling day. I tend to lean more towards a CM approach, but we use what ever works for the kids.

Hi my name is Sheila. I have 4 amazing kids ages 10, 8, 3 and 18 months. My oldest two are in public school and I have to teach them when they get home and on the weekends. At first I tried to have faith that the schools would teach them what they needed but year after year I was disappointed. Over the winter vacation I decided that I needed to become more active. We get a weekly summary from school of what they are going to learn and I have to find materials to match that since they don’t have textbooks. It’s so amazing that I can spend 10 minutes on the weekend on a particular topic and they get it immediately. My 10 year old came home and told me he finally understood his teacher because I had already explained it to him. Hopefully it will make their school lives easier. I don’t plan on pulling them out of school but supporting their efforts at home…and adding topics that aren’t touched on in school.

I have been homeschooling my 3 year old since August. She wanted to go to school so bad this year but doesn’t qualify until she is almost 6. She can’t attend a traditional preschool due to medical conditions so there is a chance she may be homeschooled permanently. At the beginning of the school year I wrote down everything I wanted her to accomplish and I have found the supporting work from this website’s letter of the week curriculum, various workbooks, teachers pay teachers website and I like to incorporate a lot of games. We let the 18 month old participate in our homeschool only once a week otherwise it’s too hectic to learn anything.

Hi, I’m Melody. I’ve been homeschooling for about three years now. I have five children, 9-year-old twin girls, 5-year-old girl, 3-year-old boy and an 11 month old boy. I think we are more traditional homeschoolers. We started homeschooling because we’re not big fans of the public school system. I love having my kids home with me all the time.

Hello all,
My name is Tasha. I have 3 kiddos. 13,13,11. This is our 2nd year homeschooling. I am using various methods for each subject to find the best fits for our family and for each kid. We started homeschooling because my children were leaving a very great (family focused) elementary school to go to a middle school that had some things we were concerned about. My husband and I feel we can take these hard middle school years and instill some great values into our children. We feel very good about our decision and will most likely follow through until each child graduates. I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s stories and getting some great insight into homeschooling. :grinning:

My name is Kathi and I have three children at home. I work part time as a pediatric RN Case manager. My oldest two (boy/girl twins) attend public high school and are taking honors classes and doing well. My youngest has learning challenges and I brought her home after third grade and have been homeschooling her ever since. Although she is in 6th grade according to school records, her work is more on par with a third/fourth grade level. But I’ve seen significant progress and my only regret is that I didn’t start homeschooling her sooner!

Hi! My name is Juli. I have an 11 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. My daughter is currently in public school and my son is in private. I’ve always been very interested in the topic of homeschooling, though I honestly don’t know how I would ever swing it since I’m a single-fulltime-working mom! I do enjoy learning as much as I can about what you do and I do use some of the idea and worksheets with my son in the evenings

Hello and good morning!

My name is Klarchen Walck and I am a mother of 4 boys, 3 of which I homeschool (my oldest graduated from public school last year). We are currently in our 3rd year of homeschooling. By Gods grace we have made it this far! It hasn’t been easy, and I have had to tweak how we do things at times. However, that is the amazing thing about homeschooling! Being able to change things that don’t work, and tailor how and what I teach to each kiddo!

My boys are in 6th, 5th and 3rd grade. As challenging as it is, I still love teaching them at home! I find that I am learning along with them as well! My husband, and I chose to homeschool a little over 3 years ago for several reasons, all of which have Christ as our center. When my kids were in public school we had many struggles, and those struggles began to grow. With my oldest being 19 now (yikes!) I was able to compare how things were in elementary back then vs. now. It’s crazy!

I always tell people I love to homeschool and I do! However, not everyday is peaches and cream. Actually, most days can be quite challenging, but we do make it through. What I Love is being able to stop and pray, whether it’s just me hiding in a closet crying, lol! Or together with all or just one of my boys. On numerous occasions we have stopped what we were doing to take a park break, just to get away from home. Another blessing in our lives is being a part of a homeschool group and co-op. I have amazing women that surround me with prayer, friendship and love. I can always get encouragement from them! Also, I am in a ladies bible group and they are amazing ladies! I can always count on them to be there for me, lifting me up in prayer. Lastly and not least by any means is my husband. He is there to listen to EVERYTHING I have to say when he walks into the door til we go to bed. He helps me with the laundry and he will do the dishes for me.

Anyway, that’s a little bit about me and our homeschool

Welcome everyone! I’m so excited for this community!! I think it will be so fun to have a place to go and ask questions, chat, share great tips and ideas, and get support in this endeavor!

P.S. Make sure that you go back to my post and click on the rafflecopter for today to say that you’ve joined the group!

I don’t want you to be misled by my first reply…my daughter struggled in other areas as well, math was just her biggest struggle. She had a hard time paying attention in a lot of subjects and was also very quiet and afraid to ask questions. After starting homeschool though, a lot of those issues resolved themselves. It’s much easier for her to pay attention being comfortable in her surroundings and she definitely is not afraid to ask questions Lol.

Personally we have always given our girls the grade level that matches their age. If I had put them in school. But in reality I’ve always taught school the their level in each subject. With my oldest the 16 year old it all worked out she is about the graduate early but as a young learner we had a times where she was at a 1st grade level reading but 3rd grade in math.
It was amazing to let her learn at her pace and she would then have a year where reading clicked and she caught up quickly and Math got challenging and so the levels match up.
I would suggest just that… Take time to see where he is and teach each subject accordingly. He can still say is in 6th grade even it his math is a bit behind maybe his reading or science will be ahead. Let his level lead so he gets a good education because that is the goal right!

Hi! I’m Becky, and I don’t actually homeschool yet–I’m pregnant with my first (a boy), who is due to be born this summer. But I am already strongly considering homeschooling for him and any other future children we have. It’s partially to help give them a solid Christian foundation while they’re still young, but also because my state’s public school system isn’t rated very well academically, and I grew up in a family where education was very highly valued. (For the record, I went to private Christian school until college, and have some very good memories of my time there. My husband went to public school, and from what he’s said, it didn’t sound like it was a great experience either academically or socially.) So obviously I don’t have a curriculum or method yet, other than knowing that my church does have a very active homeschool co-op that will probably help, but I’m trying to learn what I can now to help me make an informed decision–and hopefully get some ideas for some fun learning activities I can do with my son before he’s school-aged, too!

Btw, I’m Jenny and have always homeschooled my daughters 11 and 16. Started because Hubby said we are homeschooling but fell in love with it and couldn’t imagine anything else. Hubby grew up being homeschooled.
Glad to be here. Thanks Erica for all your hard work have loved reading your blog.

Hi I’m Michelle from Perth, Western Australia. I have 3 wonderful sons, 6,5 and 3 and have just entered our 3rd year of homeschooling with my elder two in year 1.

We decided that this was the best option for our family due to my boys personalities not fitting the mould expected at school and my husband (who is a teacher) really didn’t want our boys in a school environment where more and more government control over curriculum is happening forcing our kids to learn things we don’t agree with nor believe in and a very anti-Christ theme is emerging.

I use a combination of traditional based leaning, eclectic and free play learning.

I just wanted to say that when I first started down the path of homeschooling I did a Google search and your site was at the top Erika. Over the course of the evening reading your posts you managed to calm my nerves and bring me to the point of excitement at the journey we were about to undertake. Thank you so much

Hi! I’m Kelly. I’ve been home schooling my 3 kids for 9 years. I’m afraid to say that I don’t have a specific style but we’re pretty traditional and conservative. We use My Father’s World and really like it. We also use All About Spelling and Easy Grammar. We use Life of Fred for math, but honestly - not sure it’s working. We’ve also done Horizons and Math U See. I know skipping around isn’t good - we just haven’t found our pick.
I’m excited to have ideas and input here!

Hi, I’m Kimberly. We have been homeschooling for nine years. I have five children, but have only homeschooled four of
them. I have a very eclectic teaching style, using traditional textbooks and many other outside sources. I started homeschooling when my second daughter was a freshman. She has ADD and was really having difficulty in the public school setting. The same year I started my twins in kindergarten and we haven’t look back. Even though I second guess myself and feel overwhelmed sometimes, I love homeschooling.

Hi! My name is Jeanna. I have been homeschooling for 4 years. I have 4 children. Madelyn (12), Jesse (9), Samuel(4), John Thomas (2). Jesse and John Thomas are special needs kiddos. They have a rare speech disorder called Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Jesse is very difficult to understand and John Thomas has only a few words. The different ages and abilities make our homeschool a zoo! We are eclectic. We homeschool because we feel that is what God has called us to do. My daughter has been to public school and prefers homeschool. Jesse has done public school but was struggling so much that even the teachers recommended homeschool for him. I am so thankful for you Erica! You have been such a blessing to me. I LOVE your K3 and K4 curriculum. You have helped so much with organization of our homeschool room. Love the homeschool tours of your classroom. I am so excited about your youtube curriculum reviews. Thanks for all you do! My daughter laughs at me and says that you are my best friend and you don’t even know me!

Thank you @courtney_colleen!!! This helps a lot! I will be sure to do placement testing in math & reading for sure!!
