The Kingdom Series and The Knights of Arruthtrae, both by Chuck Black, are excellent. There are six books in each set. The recommended reading ages are 8-12, but I think it could easily go beyond that range. There are helpful discussion questions in the back of the books. My son read both series multiple times.
