@BlessedMama We teach Chinese in our homeschool as well! I love finding other homeschoolers who are teaching it as well.
My oldest started middle school this year (6th) and chose Chinese as his language. So, I figured I would stick with it when we begin homeschooling next year. He has done really well with it this year, hopefully it goes well next year.
We will be starting in the fall as well with a 1st grader and a preschooler. My biggest hurdle is making an āinvestmentā in a curriculum because what if we donāt like it. I feel like if I cover the āmainā subjects for a 1st grader (math, spelling, reading) I could be already hundreds of dollars in. Adding sciences or history (which is the fun stuff for me to teach) is even harder because there are so many choices and it gets more expensive (with supplies). And what if we use it once and hate it!!!
I feel the same way! I tried to look for companies that offer a good return policy/money back guarantee. That way I know we can return it if it just does not with for us.
Weāre starting this coming summer/fall as well.
We arenāt completely set on curriculum but we have narrowed a few things down. Luckily, Nadine (age 9, going into 5th grade) loves to learn. We are in the planning stage of getting our area ready. Iām excited to go shopping for school supplies and actually have the books! Nadine has been asking to be homeschooled for years and we finally have the ability to do so.
We are returning to homeschooling after a year of private school. I have my plans for curriculum, some I already own. Iāve received writing (CAP Writing and Rhetoric Fable) and math (Beast Academy 3). Still need to order a few other things. I plan to organize my space in June when Iām done at work (I teach at the private school).
Can anyone give advice on the absolute basic subjects needed for 5th grade? This will be our second year homeschooling, as we did for 2nd grade, and I want to keep in light and simple to get adjusted
.
I will begin my homeschool journey with my son next fall as well. He will be going into second grade. I have 2 other children, a 12 year old (7th grade) and a 16 year old (10th grade). The oldest has also shown some interest in homeschooling but I have no idea where to start with teaching a high school student!
My son is a very bright boy, he wizzes through all of his class work, and then becomes bored. His teacher has told us that he would use him as a āpeer helperā, but that doesnāt seem to help, nor does it challenge him. Over the last few months he has started complaining about going to school because itās boring and itās too easy. This has been so frustrating for me! He LOVES to learn! We have asked his teacher several times for options to challenge him at school and they have nothing! We live in a small community and they just donāt have the resources or staff for advanced students like mine.
Last week, I reached out to his teacher again, after a tough morning of getting him out the door. His teachers response was that he would sit down with him and have a chat! This never happened! Son came home and told me that I should just teach him school because I would challenge him āto be smarterā (in his words)
A light came on. Iām a SAHM, so why not!? I purchased Ericaās book and read it in a matter of a day. I started researching curriculum and supplies! We are doing this!
Both son and I are super excited for this journey! I canāt wait for him to enjoy learning again, and being the one responsible for his education!
HI, I am new here. I am starting homeschool in a couple weeks. we are new to this. I am very nervous and I have been second guessing my decision all week. I would appreciate encouragement. My boys are 5 and 4 and they were in the public school system on an IEP.
Hi there!
This is my first year homeschooling too! I also have a 5yo son who was in public school on an IEP. I canāt even tell you how much Iāve stressed and worried over homeschooling! I constantly doubt if I can help and teach my kids.
This forum has been a tremendous blessing for me! I encourage you to take time and read the posts and learn from the many seasoned homeschoolers here. I still doubt sometimes (doesnāt everyone?) but reading others encouragements and ideas have helped.
What appealed to me about homeschooling was the flexibility! My son has sensory processing disorder and is on the autism spectrum. The school setting with lots of kids and lots of chaos sent his nervous system into overdrive. We fought every morning trying to get him to go to school. I love that with homeschool we can go at his pace and add activities that help his sensory issues.
im not sure if Iām helping or not but I thought Iād let you know youāre not alone! This is new to me too and Iām nervous but I know we can do this! Will it be hard? Yes! Will it be rewarding? Absolutely! best of luck as you begin this new adventure!!
Thank you for posting and yes you helped me a lot. Very encouraging.
We are planning a āslowā start next week doing math, phonics and handwriting. We will start our formal curriculum Sept 1st. My 6yo will be starting 1st grade and doing Heart of Dakota- Beyond curriculum. This is our second year using HOD and canāt speak highly enough about it. We love this curriculum because, for me the teacher, it is almost open and go. Also, it is very biblical based which is our top priority in home discipleship and schooling. It also follows more of a Charlotte Mason approach, which Iām drawn to. My 3yo will be doing LOTW. Iāve been doing a lot of printing, and cutting, and organizing so everything will be ready for them both. Our main school room is our dining room. We have a few small book shelves so I have also been organizing them as well. I think Iām as excited about the start of the school year as my kids are. Excited to see all of what God has in store for us!!
