I’ve been trying to get better at planning homeschooling around my own work schedule, especially on days when lessons take longer than expected.

Some days we finish quickly, but on others I end up spending much more time between teaching, checking work, preparing materials, and then trying to catch up on my own tasks afterward.

I’m curious how other homeschooling parents organize their day. Do you block specific hours for lessons and work, or do you keep things flexible?

I’d also love to know if anyone tracks the actual number of hours they spend working and homeschooling each day. I’m trying to get a more realistic picture of where my time is going.

The constant shifting between teacher mode and worker mode is exhausting I use a hybrid approach. I firmly time-block my non negotiable work meetings but I keep the homeschooling blocks very flexible. If a math lesson is dragging on and causing frustration we pause it and switch to reading or take a break.

your second point yes tracking my time was the biggest game changer for me. For the first few months I felt like I was working 24/7. When I actually started logging my times I realized I was spending nearly two hours a day just _prepping_ materials and transitioning between tasks. Getting a realistic picture of your time is definitely the right first step!

That hybrid approach makes a lot of sense. I think I’ve been trying to be too rigid with our lesson times, which just causes stress when we inevitably run over. When you say you started logging your time, how exactly did you do it? Did you use a specific app or just write it down? I tried using an Excel spreadsheet last week, but honestly, calculating the exact hours and minutes with all the little breaks we take throughout the day became a chore in itself.

Spreadsheets drove me absolutely crazy for that exact reason! Trying to format cells to subtract time and account for 15 minute breaks is a nightmare. I don’t like downloading heavy tracking apps either. I actually use a super simple web tool that a remote coworker [calculadora de horas online](https://calculadorhoraspro.com/). You just punch in your start times, the breaks you took for lunch or recess, and your end times, and it instantly spits out the exact hours and minutes. I just leave a tab open on my phone, log the times as we transition, and let it do the math for me. It’s straightforward and keeps me sane!

Oh wow, that is exactly the kind of simple solution I was looking for! I just opened the site and tested it with yesterday’s messy schedule we had so many random breaks. It is so much easier than doing the math in my head or fighting with Excel formulas. Thank you so much for the recommendation, I’m going to keep this tab open and track our time properly this week.

You’re very welcome! Once you get a clear picture of your actual hours over the next week or two, it gets so much easier to build a realistic routine that doesn’t burn you out. Give yourself some grace, figuring out the work/homeschool balance is the hardest part. You’re doing a great job 😍😍
